2Coordinate

Task Area 4 – 2Coordinate is dedicated to establishing permanent, transparent governance and operational structures for NFDI4Earth that represent and integrate the diverse disciplines of Earth System Sciences (ESS). We are working towards a sustainable, future-oriented organisational and governance model for NFDI4Earth. Early efforts have enabled us to be effectively linked and embedded within the broader NFDI landscape.

Our NFDI4Earth Coordination Office administers, supports, and energises the organisational bodies and the broader NFDI4Earth community in its day-to-day operations. Acting as the primary point of contact for current and prospective members, other NFDI consortia, the DFG, the scientific community, policy stakeholders, and the public, we have successfully onboarded new members and supported several project proposals with letters of support.

NFDI4Earth is committed to driving cultural change in ESS, which we actively stimulate and monitor. This transformation guides our community towards responsible research data management and open, FAIR sharing of research data and scientific software. A cornerstone of this effort is the design and implementation of the NFDI4Earth FAIRness and Openness Commitment, developed as a joint, community-anchored vision. As culture-shaping actors, academic associations and community networks are integral partners in this process. Beyond monitoring, analysing, and communicating the facets of cultural change are core functions of 2Coordinate.

We also manage and support the federated implementation of NFDI4Earth services, including the OneStop4All with the Living Handbook, the Knowledge Hub, the user support ticket system, and the EduTrain portal’s virtual environment. Our distributed NFDI4Earth Architecture teamconnects contributions across Task Areas 3 and 4, facilitating structured, transparent decision-making to support service development and integration.

Additionally, we provide and operate the virtual environment for NFDI4Earth services and offer technical support infrastructure for quality-assured, open-source development, including continuous integration and high-performance computing environments. We also operate a virtual research environment for ESS pilots and incubators to accelerate testing and innovation within the community.
Through these coordinated efforts, Task Area 4 – 2Coordinate strengthens NFDI4Earth as a reliable, integrated, and community-driven infrastructure, supporting the ESS community in shaping the future of open, FAIR, and collaborative Earth system science in Germany.
