NFDI4Earth hosted a successful NFDI-Wide Metadata Workshop in Dresden

The NFDI Task Force Metadata recently organised a two-day metadata workshop. NFDI4Earth, active with several representatives in the Task Force, hosted the in-person workshop in Dresden and co-organised the event as a joint Task Force effort together with Text+, NFDI4Chem, MaRDI, NFDI4CS, NFDI4DS, NFDI-MatWerk and the NFDI directorate.

This workshop marked an important first step toward establishing NFDI-wide recommendations for metadata standards through a community- and consortia-driven process.

The workshop centered around several key questions:

  • Are DCAT, DataCite, and schema.org suitable metadata standard candidates for describing datasets across the NFDI from a consortium perspective?
  • Which metadata fields should be prioritized for an NFDI core profile?
  • Could re3data serve as a platform for managing metadata of NFDI-relevant research data repositories, enhancing transparency, enabling meta-analyses, and supporting interdisciplinary research?
  • What factors need to be considered to develop an NFDI-wide recommendation for re3data?

Approximately 50 participants, representing nearly all NFDI consortia, actively engaged in discussions on these topics using a World Café format. The insights gathered during the workshop will be carefully documented by the Task Force Metadata and shared with the consortia to foster further collaboration.

If you are interested in contributing to this initiative, we encourage you to register for the TF Metadata mailing list: https://www.nfdi.de/section-meta/task-force-metadata/?lang=en.

With over 60 partners spanning governmental agencies, repository providers, and infrastructure organizations, NFDI4Earth is committed to advancing this effort from the perspective of Earth System Sciences.

We look forward to continued discussions and fruitful collaboration on these important topics.
